Appalachia Reframed Grant

My partner's cat Cosette is a grumpy old lady who loves being cuddled in the morning and protests loudly if you try to move her from your arms. It's all adorable until you realize she's been laying dead weight on your carpal tunnel for like ten minutes and your hand is slowly going numb. All this is to say I had to shove her out of the way and, achy wrist be damned, update y'all on some exciting happenings!

Porch Beers Press is the January recipient of the Appalachia Reframed grant! They gave my baby a nice little write up over on Instagram. I'm excited to be able to bring all the projects that have been in my brain and on the back burner to life, as well as some that are just in the brainstorming session now. One of my main goals in starting my zine and the distro is giving voices to folks in Appalachia and the South who don't traditionally get a voice in the narratives out there. I highly encourage folks to apply if you're applicable - it's a real game changer. (application is here)

So what am I doing with this money? First wave of spending was replacing my $45 printer with a nice laser printer/copier. This way, I don't have to outsource my printing to print shops. Also got some much needed restocks on paper, other supplies I already needed, and some to experiment a bit. Oh, and a tape recorder! I want to do more long form interview zines. Finally, I got a handful of "how to make zine" books as a guidance for my Zines 101 workshops and to lend to interested folks.

Zines 101, speaking of which, is coming to the Kanawha Downtown Library's IDEA Lab February 11 at 2 PM. RSVP here! I'm hoping to see some familiar faces as well as folks I've never met.

It's open to teens and adults and is 100% FREE.

I'm still accepting submissions for the Porch Beers Press Mix issue 1 (details here).

More info on the distro side of Porch Beers Press soon. If you're in the South or Appalachia and are interested in me distributing your zine, go ahead and send me an email via the Contact link. I'm mostly interested in things like perzines, political topics, indie comics, theme zines, and poetry, but shoot yr shot anyway even if you don't fit those categories.
