Hey all! It was a mild and crazy May. I'm finally taking steps to go out and about after a year and a half of limited social interaction. My laptop is currently a six year old paperweight, hence the lack of updates. A very kind friend is giving me a new-to-me laptop, so eagerly awaiting that.
Once I get my base of operations operational again, I'm releasing Issue 2 of Porch Beers. It's another one that had some articles percolating as far back as 2019. This one is about the good, the bad, and the quirky of West Virginia. We've got food, folklore, ghost stories, Dolly Parton, The Argument, and more! I'm proud of all of my zines, but I'm especially proud of this one. (And believe me, I've laid out entire zines only to scrap them because the vibes were off.)
Zines will be available via Etsy, Wasted Ink Distro, and a third location yet to be announced. I'm also always down for zine trades and cassette trades (your band, a mixtape, something you left in your car that transformed into Queens Greatest Hits). And if none of those options work, DM me and we'll figure something out.
The hubs and I went to Howard Finster's Paradise Garden in Georgia a few weekends ago. It's a delightful place. Howard Finster, for the uninitiated, is an artist who in his 50s heard the Voice of God telling him to paint "sacred art" and ended up with over 40,000 paintings plus structural art and sculpture. He ended up being a bit of a quirky celebrity, doing an album cover for the Talking Heads and friending it up with R.E.M and Keith Haring. It's always a good time and super inspirational.
Speaking of evangelizing things, drop what you're doing and go listen to the new We Are the Union album Ordinary Life. Ska never left, but now it's queer and trans and I'm hype af. If you dig what you hear, I believe there are a few copies left of the vinyl's third pressing. I lucked into a variant of the second pressing and am eagerly awaiting it in the mail - fingers crossed for today!
